National Kidney Month

March is here and with it brings National Kidney Month. We are celebrating this wonderful organ at the NUNM library with a display on the lovely kidney. Titles include The ABCs of Kidney Disease, Clinical Nephrology in Chinese Medicine, and Renal Physiology. Come by the library and check out the wonderful world of kidneys.

Graphic Medicine

Comics aren’t just for kids! Graphic medicine explores medicine and healthcare using comics as a medium. Comics and graphic novels can be helpful tools for both practitioners and patients to learn about or express their experiences with medicine and the healthcare system. To highlight this genre, we have a variety of titles on display that explore Alzheimer’s Disease, Asperger Syndrome, anxiety, and more!

Black History Month

For the month of February, the Student Doctors for Ethnic Diversity and the library have created a display based on the theme, “Health and Wellbeing: The Condition of Women and Men’s Health”. A few titles that are being highlighted this year are Medical apartheid, Black man in a white coat, Black women’s health, The African American woman’s health book, Body and soul : the Black Panther Party and the fight against medical discrimination. The display also includes portraits and bios on Black doctors and scientists that have made contributions to the medical profession.

Celebrate Chinese New Year

2017 Chinese New Year sign -- roosterOn Friday, January 27 the library will celebrate the Year of the Rooster with festive decorations and treats in the Chinese Herb Library.  Stop by the library after the community hour celebration to sample oranges, candies, and other delicious snacks!

Ayurveda: Science & Wisdom

If you have ever been curious about what Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is, then the library has the display for you. For the next few weeks, the library will be displaying books chosen by the Ayurveda Club. These books are meant to be a window into the many facets of Ayurvedic medicine and techniques.  Some of the books featured in this display are: Ayurvedic Massage, Ayurveda and the Mind, and Scientific Basis for Ayurvedic Therapies. Come by the library and check it out.

Soon we will begin adding our print journal holdings (physical journals) so you can see what we have available on the shelf in the library. Until that process is complete, the library catalog is the best place to find a comprehensive listing of all journal holdings, both print and electronic.

The first book display of the year is all about thinking, thoughts, and how to make better decisions. Start the year off right by sinking your teeth into some literature that delves into decision making, intuition, and consciousness.

Some titles on display are Blink by Malcom Gladwell, Extraordinary Thinking by Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer, and How Doctors Think by Jerome Groopman. Come by the library and check it out.

Cookery from around the world

To celebrate the coming holidays, we have gathered cookbooks from around the world. Explore all the different kinds of cuisine the world has to offer, from raw recipes to Italian pastas. Some recipe highlights are: minestrone soup from the Moosewood Cookbook, black-eyed pea and millet dish from Vegan Soul Kitchen, poached pike from Culinaria France, and caraway anise sweet bread from A Celebration of Herbs.

The library has gathered some books from our collection that delve into the intersection of healing, supernaturalism, and religion. Some subjects that these books go over are old wives tales, Santeria healing, shamanism and the history of witchcraft. Stop by the library and check out these enticing titles.
